Welcome Maggie to Lucky Dog Rescue!! Maggie is a 2yr old miniature dachshund mix weighing 16lbs. We aren’t sure what her exact mix is without a DNA test but our best guess would be Rat terrier or other small terrier mix. Maggie was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas where she was surrendered by her owner that no longer wanted her. Maggie is a very sweet and loving girl. She like most dachshunds is a bit apprehensive at first until she trusts you. When Maggie realizes you aren’t there to harm her she becomes glued to you. It does take Maggie a few weeks to settle in to her new home. It’s important that her adopter is patient with her as she makes this transition. It took her about a week to follow her foster mom everywhere in the house and become the typical dachshund “Velcro” dog because she is always stuck to you wherever you are. At night Maggie likes to sleep under the bed or next to you under the covers. She is crate trained, mostly housetrained and not a barker. I say mostly housetrained because going outside on a leash is scary for Maggie. She prefers to go outside into a fenced area on her own without someone holding her leash and telling her to go. Maggie has never worn a harness or leash until coming to rescue. It is a new concept for her and if given the chance does try to wiggle out of her harness to run away. Instead of traumatizing Maggie every time she has to go outside we are suggesting she go to a home with a fenced yard when she can have her freedom to potty on her own and explore her yard. Maggie does well with children that respect her space, are calm and aren’t constantly in her face. If kids run by her she may bark and run after their heels. For this reason children over 5yrs would be best. She can sometimes be jealous of other dogs but is getting better with this behavior. Maggie’s perfect home would be semi-active to calm, with or without children over 5, with or without other dogs, loving and if possible knowledge of the dachshund breed. Not everyone enjoys how “clingy” the breed can be. Maggie’s adoption fee includes all vaccinations (rabies, dhlpp, bordetella), microchip with lifetime registration, 4dx test (heartworm and 3 tick borne illnesses), 6 months of heartworm prevention, spay, full health exam, health certificate, collar, leash and harness. Maggie is a in a foster home in Fond du Lac, WI. To apply for Maggie please fill out an application on our website www.luckydoggyrescue.org.
