Welcome Maverick (Chinese name Mei Xi) to Lucky Dog Rescue. Maverick is an 4yr old white terrier mix weighing about 14bs. Maverick is part of our 9th China Rescue Dogs mission to save many small breed dogs from the meat trade near Beijing. We know Maverick was likely someone’s pet that was discarded in March or April last year after the start of COVID when it was wrongly believed that pets carried the virus. Not true! It was somewhere around this time he was rescued and placed in a boarding facility. Being discarded is very stressful on them and he may need extra time to trust humans again. For months Maverick had been in a boarding facility getting up to date on his vaccinations, neuter, quarantine, passport and then finally his flight to Chicago USA!! We do know that the dogs arriving from China are scared and need time to adjust. Their lives have totally changed in every way. Many times they are hearing English language for the first time. Coming from a boarding facility they often need help with rehousetraining and some are quicker to relearn than other. Maverick is currently in a foster home and will be ready for adoption on May 9th. He does well with other dogs and seems to enjoy their company. He is social and seeks out attention and loves to be petted. Typically china dogs are great with older kids as young small kids can be overwhelming at first. He does well with his 10yr old human foster siblings. Maverick is crate trained however he may feel apprehensive toward his crate after arrival. He is adjusting well and will do very well reestablishing housetraining after travel and being in a boarding facility. Maverick is in perfect health and is fully up to date on all of his vaccinations, tests, and neuter. He is microchipped and registered to Lucky Dog Rescue for the rest of his life. He does have a special way of walking that looks like his hind legs are high stepping. He isn’t in pain, he walks well, does stairs and steps, runs, plays. His legs don’t slow him down. It’s likely he was born this way or could have had an injury early in life. The vet believes this is Mavericks normal walk. Maverick’s adoption fee will not be inexpensive. Due to border closures and needing to fly cargo, his flight alone with all the fees without medical care was $700. We are asking $750 minimally but appreciate anything beyond that to help other China dogs. Mavericks entire fee will be going back to to help get other dogs to freedom in the US. With all of our adoptions if at any point the adoption isn’t successful within the first two weeks the entire adoption fee is returned. After the two weeks of the dogs need to be rehomed for any reason the dogs must be returned to the rescue. Walter will be a great addition to any household.
